How to block websites on Chrome.

Chrome has no built-in setting for it, so you add a blocker. Here is the quick way, using Hedgerow, a free blocker that keeps your list in your browser.

Block a website in five steps

  1. Add Hedgerow to ChromeOpen the Hedgerow page on the Chrome Web Store and choose Add to Chrome. It is free.
  2. Pick the sites that pull you awayThe first-run page offers common sites to tick, and you can type your own, such as news.example.com. Only the sites you tick are saved.
  3. Allow each site, if you want the calm pageChrome asks you to allow Hedgerow for each site on your list, one at a time. Say no and blocking still works; you just see Chrome’s own error instead of Hedgerow’s page.
  4. Choose when to blockAlways, on a weekly schedule such as weekdays 9 to 5, or only during a focus session of 25, 50 or 90 minutes that you start from the toolbar or with Alt+Shift+F.
  5. Block a site as you meet itOn a page you want gone, open the toolbar button and choose “Block this site”. Blocking a site also covers its subdomains.

Does it cost anything?

No. Hedgerow is free, blocks up to 1,000 sites and has no upgrade prompts.

Will my block list follow me to another computer?

No. Your list and settings stay in this browser and do not sync between devices. You can export them from settings.

Does it work on my phone?

No. Chrome extensions don’t run in Chrome on iOS or Android.
